Courtney Watson is in her second term of office as a Howard County Council member representing the First Council District, which includes portions of Ellicott City, Elkridge and Hanover. Her public service career also includes one term on the Howard County Board of Education including two years as Chairman.
Ms. Watson has served the residents of her district in a number of roles, including two-year terms as Council Chairperson and as Zoning Board Chairperson. She also has served on Howard County’s Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance Committee, the Ellicott City Master Plan Steering Committee, and the Economic Development Authority Strategic Plan Committee. Strongly committed to fiscal responsibility in local government, Ms. Watson also served on the County’s Spending and Bond Affordability Committee.
In serving Howard County, Ms. Watson has relentlessly pursued funding to maintain a top quality public school system, agricultural preservation, and the revitalization of Howard County’s downtown. She is also a strong proponent of transparency in government.
Ms. Watson has worked in the private sector for more than 20 years as vice president for a regional insurance firm, specializing in providing risk management to small and medium size businesses.
In addition to her commitment to public service, Ms. Watson is also active in local community and charitable organizations. She has served as the President of the Women of MACo (Maryland Association of Counties) for the past two years, and was a member of the MACo Education Subcommittee. Ms. Watson was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for 2012 by the Daily Record, and received the 2012 Community Service Award by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter. The Howard County Association of Realtors recognized Ms. Watson’s dedication to community and public service by awarding her the 2012 Robert H. Kittleman Award for outstanding contribution to the community and legislative excellence. Ms. Watson was selected as the winner of the 2014 Ruby Award from Soroptimist International of Howard County.
Ms. Watson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University, and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola. Ms. Watson, a native of Clarksville, was educated in the Howard County Public School System and is a graduate of Atholton High School.
Ms. Watson and her husband, Richard, have lived in Ellicott City for over 20 years. They have three children.
